Types of Self "Storage Chokes"

A storage inductor is generally located in a switched-mode power supply (SMPS) between the switching device and the load; during the active phase it stores energy, then released during the passive phase.

The energy stored in an inductor is proportional to the inductance and to the square of the current, so it is important mainly to maximize the current, but the core must not saturate, which would bring the inductance practically to zero; thus the iron powder (IP) cores are the most suitable.

Molypermalloy powder (MPP) cores are also used due to their very good magnetic properties, in spite of the moderately higher price.

In principle, a storage inductor is not different from an IP core suppression choke, but the usual inductance values are rather different.
